Alec doesn't live here anymore

coupla months back, eddie campbell's life, humor, wit, and imagination kept me sane. adam's TPB stash of his alec and bacchus comix (after the snooter, three piece-suit, doing the islands with bacchus, dance of lifey death etc.) are soo addictive (though initially -the king canute crowd and how to be an artist were an acquired taste like beer, tapos naging parang pringles, man, once you pop, you can't stop. shit ang baduy ko.) anyway, methinks his brilliance lies in how his stuff may look so candid/random, laidback and deceivingly easily sketched but the perseverance and passion are so evident in his storytelling and art and life (-yes, they can't all be gems and he acknowledges the fact-) - nobody else could pull that off like he does. 1

here's a recent in-depth interview with campbell with his manifesto and all that jazz.

-------------------------

1somehow, campbell's art reminds me of that story of the chinese artist who was commissioned to handpaint the perfect image of something (was it a chicken?). anyway, the rich patron goes to the artist's studio when the artwork was due. he gets there and the artist paints the perfect chicken on the spot. it is perfect but the patron says something like, why should i pay such a huge fee for this random sketchy thingie? then the artist takes the guy to another room and there's this door and he opens the door and there's towering reams -no, tons of used paper, all (sumi-e style?) paintings of um, chickens. wala lang.

Other ramblings

would you read a cellphone novel? i guess it's won't be much different from reading e-books on a PDA. it certainly took me some getting used to scrolling down cory doctorow e-tomes with a post-it sized screen. recent reading habits could leave me with a new kinda carpal tunnel syndrome (ache-y thumb, bloodshot eyeballs? and the battery life is another issue so i usually read as if with a leash (w/ the unit's charger plugged). at least i can read with the lights off....oh me poor eyes.

uy joel may takashi miike interview sa DAM. Your twisted lolo is actually doing a film FOR CHILDREN daw. WTF?

mullet-head btw, pinanood ko yung friendly neighborhood otaku-pirated CD copy ng Ghost in the shell 2: Innocence. Production Fireworks/art aside, i feel that it pales in comparison to the first GIS flick. Perhaps because it's no longer, um, ahead of its time? It's been copied before and it's like a copy of a copy of a copy but slicker than the earliest strain. And it's wonky how they stick in all these quotations of Milton and ancient Japanese poet-philosopher types in the dialogue. Individual GIS Standalone Complex episodes are better, storywise, I think. (Even with the way they toss in philosophy and French art film references.) Plus, in GIS2 (bit of a spoiler here, pero predictable naman) Kusanagi only makes an appearance towards the end. I would've wanted to see what happened after her assimilation with the puppet master. Then again that could be another sequel. And Batou and Togusa's chemistry is awful as their hairstyles. You would've thought they'd update Togusa's Mullet. (Sarap i-Queer Eye! then again maybe it's Oshii's interpretation of 80's retro trendiness?) Anyway, I digress. At panget yung kopya ko. The spectacular animation -that festival scene- is a good reason for me to wait for this on the big screen (as if they'd show it here) or on DVD (preferably the 75-peso sort.) :)

Ay oo. Iyon ata iyong Zebraman. Me plano na nga akong magTNT eh.

    sick man, sick!

Nakakita kayo ng Sabu? Maganda ba? Usually, mysteries or me pagkatragic ang dating.

At isa pa, me nakita ba kayong Gamera (iyong '90s version ha) or Godzilla (na post Hollywood remake)?

  6. Blogger indi

if am not mistaken, i think i saw gamera sa save-a-lot mall last month. standard pirate presyo. kaso nga lang nagsara na ata yung building na yun. 250 is quite pricey nga. hmmm. baka may buy 5 take 5 sila.

still haven't viewed sabu. no plans yet...heheh

  7. Blogger *Rubber Doll*

Me pirated nito?

I'm sure babagsak din siya sa Quiapo, one of these days.

About us

Best described as a Murakami detox support group, we're all fans of the quirkily brilliant Japanese author, Haruki Murakami, and writing about such things as films we've seen recently and books we're reading (not to mention meandering musings on the man's work, of course) helps us to pass time while waiting for the next book from Haruki-baby.
